Professional Voice Lessons in Squamish, BC

Hi! I’m Courtenay! After growing up in North Vancouver and working as professional musician and vocal coach in Vancouver, Toronto, and internationally for over 20 years, I recently moved to Squamish.

I’ve sung my whole life, and studied voice teaching since I was 19, making vocal instruction my primary focus starting in 2008.

In addition to teaching singing, I’ve also performed and musical directed professional pop and musical theatre for the past 20 years as a musical theatre conductor (Arts Club Theatre, URP, various high schools), cover band leader (Famous Players Band), and cruise ship musical director (Princess Cruises). I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York U in Toronto, and a recent Bachelor of Education degree from UBC.

The studio provides technical singing training, tailored to each singer’s level and goals. Many clients are performers and voice teachers, or young adults with big goals. Many are also beginners. Regardless of level, I value keeping things fun and friendly, and moving at a pace and intensity that’s right for you.

Core Services:

Voice Technique:

Unlock a higher range with great pop tone via training based on the Speech Level Singing (SLS) method—a method used by many Broadway performers and international recording artists.

I trained and was a certified SLS teacher for many years before adjusting, slightly, to an approach that melds SLS with the most current vocal science and pedagogy. You can learn more about Speech Level Singing, here, and how the process works under Method.

Style coaching:

Learn style and performance more quickly and easily from a professional teacher who can break complex style elements down into smaller, discrete parts.

Learn more authoritatively by studying with a seasoned professional performer, who ‘gets’ most styles of pop and theatre music on a deep level, after having to deliver authentic perfomances in many genres to large audiences for decades.

College and career advice:

Sometimes clients here have bigger goals around college auditions, careers, or other artistic goals. My preferred teaching model is to take on fewer clients, but provide more research and experience-backed thought per client as to how they will achieve their goals.

To inform this approach, I have over two decades of experience auditioning and adjudicating singers for college programs, cover bands, musicals, and festivals. If there are aspects of your artistic development that may need to be addressed, beyond singing, I want to make sure we address them, so we’re not just singing, but truly moving the needle on your big-picture goals.

Case studies of singers’ results

Stories of challenges singers have solved with CEVS, and the end results they acheived.

“The quality of my voice as well as my confidence, not only as a technical singer, but as an overall performer, has improved immensely through training with Courtenay.

He teaches with ease and knowledge. I would recommend him to anyone seeking vocal lessons.”
