Carley’s Story:

How working on pop technique and style, helped one musical theatre singer develop a singer-songwriter career.

Starting Point:

Carley had attended college for musical theatre, but was now interested in pop singing and songwriting, and wanted to to develop a higher pop sound and range, and work out some minor vocal health puzzles.

Carley has a gifted voice, acoustically, so building more range turned out to be straightforward. The remaining challenges were developing pop style and performance skills, and sorting out a few intermittent vocal health challenges.

Process:

Style and performance were addressed by various tools, including:

  • Breaking down riffs

  • Exploring the new pop expression options her new technique afforded her

  • Mindset coaching—owning her story

Health was a more complex puzzle, involving:

  • ENT consults to get a baseline stroboscopy of vocal folds and get cleared as ‘safe to sing.’

  • Speech coaching for vocally taxing day job.

  • Researching diet alterations to help with ENT’s reflux hypothesis.

  • Ruling out various allergies and other factors.

Results:

Carley’s range, technique, style, and performance abilities all grew. Her voice became consistently healthy as a result of various speech and environment tweaks.

She sailed through the rehearsals and live show for her EP release with zero fatigue. She now writes and performs songs with more range and virtuosity. Recently Carley qualified for X-Factor UK, and she has a new project of 9 singles coming out soon.

“I booked my first lesson with Courtenay after moving to Vancouver to pursue my career in singing and songwriting.

I was able to work on pop style using my own songs, start building better technique, and figure out my vocal health—which all had a huge positive impact on my shows, writing, and recording.

I now have tools and insights that allow me to use my voice to its fullest.
