Singing Lessons for Beginners

What are singing lessons for beginners like?

What is a first lesson like?

Here is how a typical first voice lesson is structured:

  • First, I get to know your story and goals.

  • Then I listen to your voice on a simple scale and possibly a bit of a song.

  • Then we talk about one next step and work to get you some quick results so you can immediately experience the next level in your singing, whatever it may be. We might apply the new results to part of a song, too.

  • To wrap up, we’ll discuss how to practise the work we just did, in order to keep and improve on the new coordination.

What are regular lessons like?

Most beginner singing lessons, and all lessons, have 2 or 3 main components:

  • Technique Work, including

    • Brief warm-up

    • Coordination-building exercises

    • Song work, including style and performance work

The Method, here:

The technique method taught here is a hybrid of the Speech Level Singing method, and tools from many reputable vocal science and pedagogy concepts I’ve studied and tested. I call it the CSI Method. CSI stands for Connect, Sustain, Improve (or ‘Crime Scene Investigation,’ but hopefully the work feels friendlier than that?). You can read about it, here.

Unique Extras, here:

I also offer additional tools for beginners who need guidance in areas beyond technique, style, and performance. These areas could include everything from basic musicianship-building curriculum to getting ready for your first live performance.

Tell me your goals, and I’ll tell you honestly if I can offer professional solutions for what you’re looking for.

What will I achieve with lessons, here?

My desire is to find out all your vocal and artistic goals, and provide you with a realistic plan to get you there.

Some clients are busy professionals who just enjoy the process as a de-stressing hobby, and are not that concerned with timelines, as long as they’re having a good time and feel they’re progressing at an appropriate pace.

Other clients have big goals and a short timeline. How far and how fast you go is largely up to you.

So… what do you want to achieve, and when do you want to start?

“Before working with Courtenay, I had zero singing experience. The improvements over the past 3 months— taking weekly lessons online—have been absolutely astounding…”
